Pre-teaching in reading education in Amsterdam Zuidoost

This project is a collaboration between three teachers from Zonova’s Language Learning Team and two researchers from the Language Lab. At Zonova’s request, the teachers and researchers set out to find a way to offer students in group 5 and above extra support when they cannot keep up during regular reading comprehension lessons. After a phase of problem exploration, the team set to work on designing a pre-teaching programme. This programme prepares students for a text covered during the lesson by activating and extending background knowledge and discussing key concepts. This approach can be used in any lesson in which a text is the focus, for example also in a world orientation lesson. A training course will be designed in autumn 2023 to train teachers in applying pre-teaching in reading instruction. The approach will be tested and researched in Amsterdam Zuidoost in spring 2024.
